This material is a wood that originates in Central or South America; it can be called Honduran Mahogany, South American Mahogany, US Mahogany, or True Mahogany. Mahogany Wood comes from hardwood trees growing in tropical regions, primarily Central and South America. Mahogany wood comes from South America and Mexico. It has also been imported successfully into several states in the Caribbean. Among these, Cuba is most well-known for mahogany trees. Mahogany is a heavily deforested wood, and its production is strongly regulated within its home regions. Mahogany Wood is a hardwood variety of wood found primarily in North and Central America. Mahogany wood is usually from the tree Swietenia macrophylla, a tree native to South America and Mexico. Trees that produce mahogany also grow in Southern Florida, the Bahamas, and all over the Caribbean. Mahogany trees in the genera Swietenia and Khaya are grown worldwide today, resulting in several different varieties of mahogany wood. Mahogany trees of Swietenia-related species are also found growing on plantations throughout Asia, such as India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Mahogany Species Around the World Nearly related species to Swietenia are found throughout Africa and Asia but are considered to provide timber that is inferior to genuine mahogany (yet is still expensive). Swietenia humilis, or P, is considered genuine mahogany, is restricted to the dry forests of Central America's Pacific Ocean. Swietenia mahagoni, as well as a third species, were introduced into several Asian countries during the restrictions placed on American mahogany in the late 1990s. Both are now grown successfully and harvested on plantations in these countries. The only hardwoods that may be appropriately called Mahogany are those from the Meliaceae family, Swietenia mahagoni (commonly known as Dominican, Cuban, West Indian, or Small Leaf Mahogany), Swietenia macrophylla (widely known as Honduran, or Large Leaf Mahogany), and Swietenia humilis, (commonly known as Pacific Coast Mahogany). With Cuban mahogany in short supply, the closest related species, Honduran Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), called genuine mahogany, big-leaf and true mahogany, is now coveted. Cuban mahogany, one of many species of American mahogany, was the first tree identified as mahogany, but Cuban mahogany was killed for its beauty. Mahogany comes from three major species of tropical hardwood native to the Americas. Mahogany is straight-grained, crimson-brown wood of three tropical hardwood species in the Swietenia genus, indigenous to the Americas and a member of the Pantropical Chinaberry family, the Meliaceae. An Overview of Cuban Mahogany Cuban Mahogany, Swietenia mahogany (genus and species names), The Kingly Wood, has been among the most highly regarded and prized woods since the late sixteenth century. In recent decades, the species known as African Mahogany has been offered in wood markets. African Mahogany is not considered to have the same quality as genuine Mahogany, and wood is still purchased for high prices, mainly due to restricted exports from Latin American countries. Many experts on the species of the wood only consider the mahogany of Cuba, Honduran, South American, and African mahogany to be the species of mahogany. More than a half-dozen wood species are considered within the category of Mahogany, although all are of the same species. The reddish-brown hue of the wood is trendy, and many of the woods are called mahogany as they share a similar reddish-brown color. Mahogany has a delicate, long grain that is generally straight, with perhaps slight waves. When working with this species, it feels slightly heavier and more complex than true mahogany, and its variegated grain may look like ribbons of lighter and darker colors. Like all woods, American Mahogany will slowly turn silvery gray in the open air unless stained or sprayed. The Ideal State of Mahogany Wood Genuine mahogany has relatively uniform coloring and graining characteristics across the same board, but the color from tree to the tree can vary greatly. True mahogany is one of the more durable lumbers available, partly due to its legendary stability. Mahogany is among the most highly valued and used lumbers for making furniture, as it is durable and handsome. As a result, mahogany trees may attain legal, commercial-sized growth within 50 years, by which time they are providing fine-quality timber for high-end furniture. Information on the mahogany tree suggests the wood is thick, and the mahogany tree can stand up to heavy winds. This broad-leaf family produces a kind of wood with a mahogany appearance, is spread across Pacific islands, and is cheap. A domesticated mahogany species was found growing in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands more than 250 years ago. South America and Mahogany Woods Considered to be the genuine mahogany, a South American variety, Swietenia macrophylla grows in Brazil, southern parts of Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, and on the banks of the Amazon river in Peru and Bolivia. Considered authentic mahogany, the South American version of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is grown in Brazil, the southern reaches of Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, and the banks of the Amazon in Peru and Bolivia. Other less available or rare species include Brazilian mahogany (Plathymenia reticulate ), Hawaiian mahogany (Acacia koa), also called koa, American mahogany (Gymnocladus dioicus) al, so called Kentucky coffee tree, Pacific Coast mahogany (Swietenia humilis ), red mahogany (Eucalyptus resinifera) from Australia, horseflesh mahogany (Lysiloma sabicu) from the West Indies, and Columbian mahogany (Cariniana pyriformis ). Both are accessible today. Most remarkable of the other less-valuable species is the relatively mild-tasting Lauana, sold as Philippine Mahogany in the United States. Also within the Meliaceae family are Entandrophragma cylindricum, usually known as Sapeli, and Entandrophragma useful, traditionally known as Sipo, two other African wood species which have been converted into substitutes for mahogany when the real thing became scarcer and was listed as endangered.
