Rolex watches are made in Switzerland and bear the phrase 'Swiss made' to represent this. Rolex's major factory is in Geneva. Still, I was invited to tour four Rolex manufacturing facilities in Switzerland and get an up-close look at how Rolex makes its famous watches. Rolex has four factories where it makes watch parts and operates. Rolex does not just have a single factory from where Rolex makes its watches. Rolex produces nearly one million watches per year, but, astonishingly, no shortcuts are taken during the production process, based on what I was able to observe (and I have been in many watch factories). Rolex can expedite the process on specific models when needed, but so many parts are required per watch, and everything is made from basic materials in-house. Remember that Rolex movements are made in-house, so Rolex must first complete the parts before they can put them together. Many luxury watchmakers manufacture designs and components in-house, but the Rolex brand takes things one step further, even manufacturing some of the raw materials used in its construction. A Brief Overview of Rolex's History Throughout the Rolex brand's history, Rolex has consistently acquired all the manufacturers and parts suppliers that formerly produced components for their watches. Below, we will look at how Rolex makes its watches more closely, from manufacturing the raw materials used to build them to hand-assembling and checking every piece. With an estimated one million watches produced annually, the Rolex brand is easily one of the world's most prolific luxury watchmakers. As the world's prolific luxury timepiece maker, it almost seems odd that Rolex can still produce watches to a very high standard found in the industry. With this, Rolex is essentially the only watchmaker with its own Rolex Gold Foundry. To the best of our knowledge, Rolex is the only watchmaker that makes its gold or even has an actual foundry on-site. Now, Rolex is perhaps not known for the Rolex gemstone setting. However, Rolex does indeed manufacture gemstone-set watches, and they are doing so to perfection. Because Rolex controls all gold and platinum manufacturing and processing, Rolex can rigorously guarantee the quality and the best-looking pieces. It seems like the whole company is focused on making better watches and constantly looking at ways to improve them. Rolex as a Classic of the Industry Rolex has continuously innovated, very quietly, emphasizing practicality and usability, making its watches more practical, rugged, usable, and functional, keeping the conventional "one watch, one use" philosophy in mind. No company has innovated in an industrial approach to the manufacture of watches more frequently or successfully than Rolex, which has gone on to be not just the most critical single watch brand, but also one of the essential brands overall, alongside Mercedes and, recently, Google. Having traveled there, I fully understand why Rolex is not just the most successful high-end watchmaker but also one of the most successful luxury brands on earth. That is, Rolex is a luxury watch brand, and they are expensive, but compared with other brands, they are certainly not the most expensive watches. While Rolex does not advertise the number of watches it makes annually; a generally accepted amount is about 1,000,000 annually. Although precise manufacturing figures are not made public, an estimated one million or so Chronometer-certified watches are being made by the Rolex brand alone yearly. Rolex watch manufacturing now takes place at four different facilities, all located in Switzerland. One of the company's suppliers has around 800 workers working on dials and setting the gemstones in Rolex watches. The factory also produces Rolex-exclusive components you cannot find in any other watch. Now, one of the firm's suppliers is the only plant to feature the trademark Rolex color's exterior, green. It is a facility many know as the heart of Rolex production. One of the suppliers to the company is home to all the top executives and Rolex Heritage Department. The Final Production of Rolex Watches In terms of production, Les Acacias is Rolex final assembly facility for all watches. If today, Rolex, is an fl ly integrated manufacturer and it produces the majority of watches parts, that situation has come about only since Rolex acquired some of its subcontractors. Rolex could not purchase movements from another manufacturer, nor was its manufacturing allowed to sell to another watch brand (except for the clocks, which Aegler does not make). Founder Hans Wilsdorf began having all Rolex watches made in the famous Aegler Manufacture, located in Bienne, Switzerland. In 1908, Wilsdorf registered the trademark Rolex, which became the watch branding for both Wilsdorf and Davis. The privately owned Foundry was a factory in which Rolex developed their proprietary formulas for three types of gold. Due to Rolex's passionate commitment to quality throughout their vast output, watches, on average, require approximately one year of lead time.
